Pre-Admission Information

Pre-surgery Preparation


If your doctor has requested you take daily Aspirin, Dispirin, Plavix or Warfarin, please discuss with him/her if you are able to stop taking this medication 10 days prior to surgery.

If you are taking daily fish oil tablets or Ginkgo Biloba, please refrain from taking these 10 day prior to your surgery.

Fasting – Adults & Toddlers:

  • No solid food or smoking 6 hours prior to admission.
  • Clear fluids only (that you can see through) up to 2 hours prior to admission, then nothing to eat or drink, including water, no chewing gum.

Fasting – Babies:

  • No solid foods including milk and formula 6 hours prior to admission.
  • No breast milk 4 hours prior to admission.
  • Clear fluids only (that you can see through) up to 2 hours prior to admission, then nothing to drink including water.

Day of surgery – what to bring:

  • Any Xrays/Scans/MRI’s relevant to your surgery to the hospital.
  • All medications that you are currently taking.
  • Medicare/DVA Card.
  • Private Health Insurance details.
  • Pensioner/Safety Net/HCC cards.
  • Night Attire (overnight patients only).
  • Toiletries (overnight patients only).
  • Mobile phone (please turn to silent/vibrate whilst in hospital and turn OFF whilst in ICU or the Emergency Department.
  • Laptop, IPAD, mobile phone etc (if you wish to to access the hospitals high speed wireless computer network).

Day of surgery – what to avoid:

  • Please DO NOT wear any makeup, deodorant, moisturisers or nail polish (fingers & toes). 
  • Please leave valuables such as jewellery at home. Other items of value such as watches and small amounts of cash may be placed in your locked bedside drawer or in the hospital safe.

Preparing Children for Hospital

Studies have shown that children who are prepared before a hospital visit tend to be less worried, cope more effectively with medical problems, need less medication and adapt more quickly to being back home than children who have not known what to expect.

There are many things you can do to prepare your child for coming into hospital. In general the younger your child is, the less time you should leave between talking about the visit and the event happening. It’s often better to spread the information out over a few days than give it all at once. You know your child best and will be able to tailor the information you give to your child’s level of understanding.

Being positive, calm, open and honest and as matter-of-fact as possible will help your child see that you feel confident about the procedure and this will help allay their fears.


  • If you are having a general anaesthetic or sedation, you will need to arrange someone to collect you from the hospital after your procedure. YOU CANNOT DRIVE.

Please note that your theatre date and time may need to be rescheduled either prior or on the day of your admission for emergency procedures.

Please Note: Your SMAC appointment may take up to 2 hours. Please allow sufficient car parking time.

  • Disclosure to others involved in your health including treating doctors and specialists outside this medical practice, including other health care providers and insurance/health fund companies.  This may occur through referral to other doctors or for medical tests and in the reports or results returned to us following such referrals
  • Disclosure for research and quality assurance activities to improve individual and community health care practice management.  You will be informed when such activities are being conducted and given the opportunity to 'opt out' of any involvement
  • Where legally required, such as providing records to court, mandatory reporting or child abuse or the notification of certain communicable diseases.

You are entitled to access your own health records at any time convenient to both yourself and the practice except in some circumstances where access might legitimately be withheld or where your request is frivolous.  A charge may be imposed for processing your request.  Where you disagree with the accuracy of the information recorded please discuss with your doctor as you are entitled to have your corrections included in the file.

You are not obliged to provide any information requested  but the failure to do so may compromise the quality of the health care and treatment you receive.

You may withdraw your consent to use and disclose personal information (except where legal obligation must be met).

Securing Your Data
